Le Kickball Official Rules
A positive attitude and a sweet outfit required.
Regulation Games
- Games are a maximum of 7 innings or 60 minutes, whichever occurs first.
- No new innings may start after 60 minutes.
- Games can end in a tie during the regular season.
- Post-season games have no time limit and must have a winner.
- Rochambeau (rock-paper-scissors) will determine home/away before each game.
- A minimum of 2 referees is required per game. The home plate umpire calls all balls and strikes. The second ump is at First Base and records the score and innings. When available a third ump is at Third Base. No arguing balls and strikes.
- Slaughter Rule:
- If a team leads by 10 or more runs after the 2nd inning, they may score a maximum of 4 runs per inning until the deficit is reduced to fewer than 10 runs.
Pitching, Catching, and Fielding
- Maximum 10 players in the field; minimum 8 to play (at least 4 of each gender).
- Teams must have a pitcher and catcher.
- No player may be in front of the diagonal line from 1st to 3rd base before the ball is kicked. Pitchers must remain fully behind the infield diagonal between 1st & 3rd until there is contact with the ball. Infringement resulting in a fielding advantage = kicker awarded first base.
- No part of the pitcher’s front foot may be in front of or across the front edge of the pitching strip prior to contact by the kicker.
- There are 4 outfielders. Outfielders must remain in the grass until the ball is kicked.
- Catchers must remain fully behind the kicker and outside the kicking box until the ball is kicked. Infringement resulting in a fielding advantage = kicker awarded first base.
- No intentional face shots. If a runner is hit in the head or face by a thrown ball (unless sliding), the runner is safe.
- Interference rules:
- A fielder blocks a runner’s path while not playing the ball.
- A runner prevents a fielder from playing the ball.
- Non- fielders affecting play.
- Interference penalties:
- Offense: Runner out, others return to previous bases.
- Defense: All runners advance to the base they were headed for.
- Defensive players must attempt to catch fly balls. Intentionally dropping a fly ball = rekick.
- No leading off or stealing. Runners must tag-up on caught fly balls.
Kicking
- Kicking order set before game start.
- All Fielders must kick. A player who does not kick shall not play!
- Any order permitted; no gender alteration required; order of kicking is set for the entirety of the game.
- If a kicker is injured, their spot is skipped.
- Kicking out of order = automatic out.
- Bunting is legal.
- A kick occurs when the ball is contacted by the foot or leg below the hip.
- A ball touching the kicker above the hip = dead ball.
- In live play, a double touch of the ball by the kicker is an out.
Running and Scoring
- No leading off or stealing.
- Runners may leave the baseline within 3-4’ to avoid a fielder.
- Swerving, jumping, and sliding are permitted to avoid a ball.
- When a Live ball makes contact with a runner in fair territory is an out unless they are safely on a base.
- To advance after a caught fly ball, Runners must tag up.
- Once the ball is controlled near the pitcher’s mound, the play is over.
- For a runner to advance to the next base as the pitcher takes control of the ball the runner must be more than halfway to the next base.
Strikes
A strike is:
- Any part of the ball crossing through the strike zone. See the diagram below.
- An attempted kick and miss.
- A foul ball on strike 1 or 2.
- 4 fouls total = strikeout.

Balls
A ball is:
- Any pitch outside the strike zone and not swung at.
- Four balls = walk to first base.
Fairs and Fouls
A Fair Ball is:
- Ball lands and stays in fair territory.
- Ball lands in fair territory, then rolls into foul territory after passing the 1st or 3rd base.
- Touched by a player, referee, or participant while in fair territory before hitting the ground in foul territory.
- Ball touches a runner while still in fair territory and before hitting the ground in foul territory.
- Ball touches the kicker outside the kicking box before hitting the ground in foul territory.


A Foul Balls is:
- Foul balls never count as strikes. Four fouls = an out.
- Ball first touching the ground in foul territory
- Ball first touching a fielder or Referee in foul territory, while the ball is over foul territory
- Ball landing in fair territory, then entering foul territory before crossing 1st or 3rd base
- Ball touched more than once or stopped in the kicking box.
- Ball landing in foul territory.
- Ball kicked above the hip, or contacted twice in one kicking attempt.


Outs
- 3 strikes.
- 4 fouls.
- Caught fly ball.
- Runner hit by a live ball off base.
- Interference by offense.
- Tag out or forced out.
- Kicker kicking out of order.
- Runner leaving base early.
- Intentionally dropped fly ball (rekick, not out)
Ball in Play
- Begins when a ball is fairly kicked.
- Ball in play ends when controlled near/on the pitcher’s mound by any member of the fielding team, or immediate to interference.
Post-Game & Sportsmanship
- Team captains sign score sheets after each game.
- Opposing team awarded 0-3 sportsmanship stars.
- Sportsmanship ratings affect playoff seeding.
- Teams forfeiting 3+ games may not be invited back.
- Referees may eject players for the night for unsportsmanlike behavior.
- League commissioners handle any player bans.
Reminder:
Trash talk is allowed if clever and within the Le Kickaball Harassment & Misconduct Policy.

- Any player who behaves in an unsportsmanlike manner may be asked to leave for the night and return next week. Consistent unsportsmanlike behavior could result in a ban from the league. Decisions to have a player leave for a night can be made by refs. A decision to be ejected from the league will be made by the commissioners only.
